3 Things to Avoid when You Burn Yourself There is perhaps nothing more frustrating and at times painful than burning yourself. Sometimes, we may splash some kind of hot oil on our skin and it seems to burn relentlessly. At other times, we may end up with the burn because of overexposure to the sun or other problems that are similar to this. In order for you to overcome the problem, there are some simple natural cures that can be done that will tend to remove the pain and get you started on the road to healing. There are also some things that you should avoid, even if a well-meaning friend tells you to do it. Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about burns is that there are a lot of people out there that are going to tell you to put butter on it immediately. This is actually one of the worst things that you can do and although it does have a soothing relief to it, it is not doing you any favors as far as healing is concerned. As a matter of fact, butter can actually smother the area and cause a number of other issues that will keep it from healing properly. Instead of putting butter on the burn, simply go over to the sink and run some cool water over the area for several minutes. Don't bother trying to put ice water on the area, this may actually cause frostbite to skin that is already damaged. Rather than ice, just apply the cool water and continue to do so until you start to feel a little bit better. You can then assess the situation a little easier, now that you are free of the pain that you are experiencing from the burn itself. Finally, avoid touching the burn whenever possible. As it continues to heal, you're going to have some itching in the area and it is going to be difficult, if not impossible to ignore. Although the urge to scratch the area will be quite difficult to get beyond, scratching it may actually cause an infection that is difficult to control. As a matter of fact, breaking the skin in this way with our fingernails is perhaps one of the worst things that we can do to a healing area, and you would be surprised with how many individuals end up on some kind of medication, after they did everything right and treating it naturally from the start.
